Our Speaker at the next
General Meeting at 7:00 PM April 25th will be Hans Berge from King
County government who is part of the team working on restoring the Kokanee
population in Lake Sammamish. Our Issaquah TU Chapter is also part of this
group.
“The collaborative efforts of
the Lake Sammamish Kokanee Work Group have been underway since 2007, with
efforts of individual entities dating back more than a decade prior to that. We
are hopeful that all of these actions are in fact contributing to an
improvement in the health (abundance, productivity, distribution, and
diversity) of the population, and that we are making progress toward achieving
our goal: Preventing the extinction and improving the health of the native
kokanee population such that it is viable and self-sustaining, and then
supports fishery opportunities. A specific example action is our highest
priority near term action: implementation of a conservation hatchery program
for kokanee at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery to maintain abundance and existing
genetic stock.”
This promises to be a very
informative meeting with lots of opportunity to ask questions about this
important work. We will also have some discussion about the upcoming salmon
seasons in area 9 & 10. We will have our monthly board meeting at 6:00 PM
if you have any issues you would like the board to address.
