They have also been working with the Sound Salmon Solutions group that is taking over the everyday operations at the Willow Creek Hatchery. We will have a quick update from them with regard to who they are and how they intend to use the hatchery in a very similar pattern (education and enhancement) we have for the last 40 years.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304970124829680049.post-13768950686238142232017-04-23T09:40:00.001-07:002017-04-23T09:40:40.759-07:00Next General meeting set for April 26th 2017We will have our next General Meeting on Wednesday April 26th 7:00 PM at the Edmonds Senior Center 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. Our guest at this meeting will be Rodney Pond from Sound Salmon Solutions. He will be discussing their plans for taking over the operation of the Willow Creek Hatchery at some point in the future. They are a non-profit group that has as their goal: "to help salmon return to our watersheds. Through interactive education, hands on stewardship and state of the art habitat restoration we nurture the relationships between people and our wild spaces to support salmon recovery". They are a large energetic group that will be able to continue the work we began nearly 30 years ago.
We will have a raffle and refreshments. We also need to assemble a list of volunteers who would be able to help out with our Annual Open House that is part of the Waterfront Festival the weekend of June 3rd and 4th. You can volunteer for morning or afternoon shifts each day to help with the fish pond, cleaning fish, working on the popcorn and juice table or showing people around the hatchery. Email to: edmondstu@gmail.com if you are able to help us out and which day and shift you can come.Chapter Presidenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02251218938345094485noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304970124829680049.post-49117183801212979452016-11-28T08:15:00.001-08:002016-11-28T08:15:18.622-08:00General Meeting Wednesday Nov 30thWe will have our next General Meeting on Wednesday November 30th 7:00 PM at the Edmonds Senior Center 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. Edmonds Salmon Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting a presentation by Jeff
Duda, who is a research ecologist for the US Geological Survey’s Western
Fisheries Research Center in Seattle, WA. The topic will be: After decades of
debate, planning, and environmental impact studies, the largest dam removal
project in U.S. history was conducted on the Elwha River in Washington State,
USA, from 2011 to 2014. The story of this river, with rugged headwaters,
protected wilderness, legendary and culturally important salmon runs, and two
hydroelectric dams whose placement marshaled wholesale socioeconomic and
ecological changes, has become an iconic saga of change, perseverance and
renewal. The two dams blocked fish migrations and disrupted sediment transport
for a century, disrupting the structure and function of the Elwha River.
Removal of the 210’ and 105’ tall dams and the release of a large portion of
the 27.5 million cubic yards of stored
reservoir sediment, has provided a living laboratory to study the patterns,
processes and outcomes of dam removal from multiple scientific perspectives.
This presentation will provide a tour of what has been called a “Science
Disneyland”, share progress on the rebirth of a river ecosystem, and place this
project into a larger perspective of dam removals and river restoration in the
21st century.

Meeting will be held at the Edmonds Senior Center on April 27th at
7:00 PM. The Center is located at 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. The
meeting is open to all those interested in hearing about this very interesting
and important project.

We had a good turnout from around the state and they were all very complimentary of our facility. Ray Crawford, Greg Beach, John Hjort and Walter Thompson did a lot of work in the classroom to get ready for this event. We completed a new heating system, installed new lighting and repainted the walls. As you can see from the photo, the room is bright and warm.
On the calendar we will post events for the Hatchery for seminars, meetings and work crews. We will also show the other groups that use the Hatchery for meetings and seminars.
With the unknown fishing opportunities for this month and when they may or may not start, we have decided to postpone this months meeting until February. If there is an opening in the Blackmouth fishery, we will make every effort to put together a fishing trip the end of February first of March. This will be announced as soon as we can get some firm information.
We would also like to welcome our newest member of the board, Luke Hanna. Welcome aboard Luke!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304970124829680049.post-16543930643804935982015-11-16T10:02:00.001-08:002015-11-16T10:02:50.598-08:00November 18th General Meeting

Come join us at the Edmonds Senior Center as we welcome back Leland Miyawaki on Wednesday, June 25th at 7 pm.When he isn’t working part-time at Orvis in Bellevue, you can find Leland fishing and guiding on the local Puget Sound and British Columbia beaches. As Leland says, “fishermen usually focus only on salmon and steelhead when they think about fishing in the saltwater of Western Washington, but you can fish for native trout all-year round with a fly rod. It’s a great opportunity and a uniquely Northwest experience.”
He’ll discuss his surface fly the “Miyawaki Beach Popper” that he uses to catch those wild coastal cutthroat trout and he’ll even tie flies. Hope to see as many as possible show up for this special presentation. We will also have a raffle for kids fishing gear and maybe even a nice fly rod for the more experienced. Please plan to attend with your kids and grandkids and if you are so inclined we also could use some volunteers to work each day with helping the kids fish, cleaning, setup and take down. If interested in volunteering let Gary McConaghy know at 206-354-0877.
For our June 25th General Meeting we are very excited to have back Leland Miyawaki from Orvis in Bellevue to talk about beach fly fishing in the Puget Sound. Leland always gives a great presentation and has a lot of wonderful information about being able to fish in the sound even if you don't have a boat. More about his presentation latter but wanted you to be aware and mark your calendars to attend.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304970124829680049.post-57727886302173976562014-04-09T14:36:00.000-07:002014-04-09T14:36:41.400-07:002014 Update2014 Program update and meeting schedule. The fish have been moved into the pond and are thriving, thanks to the volunteer feeders and the expertise of Walter, Ray and crew. The same can be said for the Coho currently residing in the net pen at the Edmonds Fishing Pier.
We will have a revised schedule for our General Meetings this year with the next one being on Wednesday April 23rd at the Edmonds Senior Center. Our speaker will be Ron Gardner, who has given us this information about his expertise and experience:

My name is Ron Garner and I've always loved to fish. The waters in Washington have more opportunity than hardly anyone realizes. In our beautiful state, I have landed many, many kings from 30-50 pound kings, High teen to 20+ pound Coho, Lingcod to 50 pounds, and several mid hundred pound halibut. Most think you have to go to Alaska or BC to catch this quality of fish. Not so.

After years of fishing and watching our fisheries shorten, I rolled up my sleeves. I got involved with WDFW in the studies of our fish and shellfish to understand how they all interact as well as how many we can take effectively without harming the resource. I worked with many WDFW staff in decision making. Today most of those staff are running the agency. What I have found is that there is never a real clear one size fits all answer for our fisheries. That includes managing the same fisheries year after year.

My love for the sport and wanting to see our fisheries come back to historical levels is my driver. Future generations need to have what we have.

But to excel you need to learn that each type of fish is different and lives different. This is where the challenge comes in. After studying their habits and what they eat you can start to piece together a game plan on how to manage them and most of all, Catch Them!

Not many know that 5 of us met in Port Angeles in 2003 and hammered out the strait halibut fishery proposal that we enjoy today. We had it moved it forward from June to April when the fish are in. Understanding these fish come in and leave at certain times of the year, helps to understand how to catch them. This has been the driver of having great results.

I am a structure studying nut. I have thousands of hours of studying marine charts. I paid attention to what we were catching on what type of structure and its layout. In the beginning fishing the ocean, I paid attention of where our hot spots were, their shape, depth, forage, kelp, and what the bottom is made of. In finding certain fish you can figure out where halibut, lingcod, rockfish, cabezon, and even shrimp and crab are. From this I have discovered many halibut fishing holes that no one knows about in the ocean and even inside. There are techniques that will put you on more fish that I will be showing you. You will go away with a better understanding of where to find halibut and why.<span style="color: #4c4674; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">

In addition to Ron's talk, we will also have a raffle.

As for the schedule for the balance of the year, we will have general meeting on 6/25, 9/24 & 11/19. We will also be holding our Open House in conjunction with the Edmonds Waterfront Festival 5/30 & 6/1 and we hope to see a lot of your attend and or volunteer to help out. We will hold our summer BBQ and auction at the Hatchery on Wednesday August 6th.
