General Meeting March 28th 2018

The next general meeting will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday March 28^th at the Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. Edmonds, WA 98020. The presentation this month will be by the Edmonds-Woodway High School Students Saving Salmon Club. The will give us an update on their activities around the Edmonds area working to improve streams for salmon habitat and other related activities. They have also been working with the Sound Salmon Solutions group that is taking over the everyday operations at the Willow Creek Hatchery. We will have a quick update from them with regard to who they are and how they intend to use the hatchery in a very similar pattern (education and enhancement) we have for the last 40 years.

Next General meeting set for April 26th 2017

We will have our next General Meeting on Wednesday April 26th 7:00 PM at the Edmonds Senior Center 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. Our guest at this meeting will be Rodney Pond from Sound Salmon Solutions. He will be discussing their plans for taking over the operation of the Willow Creek Hatchery at some point in the future. They are a non-profit group that has as their goal: "to help salmon return to our watersheds. Through interactive education, hands on stewardship and state of the art habitat restoration we nurture the relationships between people and our wild spaces to support salmon recovery". They are a large energetic group that will be able to continue the work we began nearly 30 years ago.
We will have a raffle and refreshments. We also need to assemble a list of volunteers who would be able to help out with our Annual Open House that is part of the Waterfront Festival the weekend of June 3rd and 4th. You can volunteer for morning or afternoon shifts each day to help with the fish pond, cleaning fish, working on the popcorn and juice table or showing people around the hatchery. General Meeting Wednesday Nov 30th

We will have our next General Meeting on Wednesday November 30th 7:00 PM at the Edmonds Senior Center 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. We will be discussing the activities for the next year including launching the net pen after a years absence because of the work being done at the Edmonds Fishing Pier. We will also have elections for the Board of Directors for 2017. If anyone is interested in helping out on the board please plan to attend and make sure you let us know you're interested.

September 28th General Meeting

Our next General Meeting will be at 7:00 PM on Wednesday September 28th at the Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. The meeting will include a special presentation on the Kokanee restoration project in the Lake Sammamish watershed and updates on what's happening in the chapter.

Jim Bower of King County and David Kyle of Trout Unlimited will be discussing native kokanee in the Lake Washington Basin, especially the Lake Sammamish watershed. Topics will include current population trends, ongoing restoration efforts, what we understand from historic accounts including pre- and post- construction of the ship canal, and what has led to the decline in this population between the 1920s and early 2000s. 

Jim Bower is a fish ecologist with King County and David Kyle is Trout Unlimited’s Lake Sammamish Kokanee Restoration Project Manager.

Women's Fly Fishing Class

The Edmonds Salmon Chapter and Heather Hodson are hosting a day of Fly Fishing lessons for Women on August 13th from 9:00am to 3:00 pm. See the brochure below for information:

OPEN HOUSE THIS WEEKEND
We are having our open house this weekend at the Hatchery @ 95 Pine Street with a Fishing Pond for Kid's Trout fishing age 12 and under. Admission is free. There will be tours of the hatchery and you can feed the coho remaining in the pond. We will be open each day June 4th and 5th from 10:00 am to 4:00pm.

APRIL 27TH GENERAL MEETING>THE REBIRTH OF THE ELWHA RIVER

Title: The Rebirth of Elwha River

The Edmonds Salmon Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting a presentation by Jeff Duda, who is a research ecologist for the US Geological Survey’s Western Fisheries Research Center in Seattle, WA. The topic will be: After decades of debate, planning, and environmental impact studies, the largest dam removal project in U.S. history was conducted on the Elwha River in Washington State, USA, from 2011 to 2014.  The story of this river, with rugged headwaters, protected wilderness, legendary and culturally important salmon runs, and two hydroelectric dams whose placement marshaled wholesale socioeconomic and ecological changes, has become an iconic saga of change, perseverance and renewal. The two dams blocked fish migrations and disrupted sediment transport for a century, disrupting the structure and function of the Elwha River. Removal of the 210’  and 105’  tall dams and the release of a large portion of the 27.5  million cubic yards of stored reservoir sediment, has provided a living laboratory to study the patterns, processes and outcomes of dam removal from multiple scientific perspectives. This presentation will provide a tour of what has been called a “Science Disneyland”, share progress on the rebirth of a river ecosystem, and place this project into a larger perspective of dam removals and river restoration in the 21^st century.

The Meeting will be held at the Edmonds Senior Center on April 27^th at 7:00 PM. The Center is located at 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020. The meeting is open to all those interested in hearing about this very interesting and important project.

February 24th General Meeting

The next General Meeting will be held at the Willow Creek Hatchery located at 95 Pine Street, Edmonds, WA 98020 (NW corner of Highway 104 & Pine Street). Parking is available on the hatchery grounds and if that is full, park along Pine Street above the entry to the Hatchery.

The agenda will include:

* A 30 minute video, Undamming the Elwha. The video follows the journey of the Elwha River from the day it was dammed to the day it was set free once again
* Brief overview of our hatchery program and opportunity to get up close to our coho fry that have moved  from the incubator to the raceways.
* Overview of club activities and facility improvements.

Snacks and beverages will be available

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Hatchery on Wednesday night the 24th.

Chapter hosted State Council Meeting

The Edmonds Salmon Chapter was host to the WCTU (Washington Council Trout Unlimited) meeting on January 30th. We had a good turnout from around the state and they were all very complimentary of our facility. Ray Crawford, Greg Beach, John Hjort and Walter Thompson did a lot of work in the classroom to get ready for this event. We completed a new heating system, installed new lighting and repainted the walls. As you can see from the photo, the room is bright and warm.

Update for 2016

As you can see from the new layout we have updated the website for 2016 and added a calendar feature. On the calendar we will post events for the Hatchery for seminars, meetings and work crews. We will also show the other groups that use the Hatchery for meetings and seminars.
With the unknown fishing opportunities for this month and when they may or may not start, we have decided to postpone this months meeting until February. If there is an opening in the Blackmouth fishery, we will make every effort to put together a fishing trip the end of February first of March. This will be announced as soon as we can get some firm information.
We would also like to welcome our newest member of the board, Luke Hanna. Welcome aboard Luke!

November 18th General Meeting

The next General Meeting will be held at the Edmonds Senior Center this Wednesday January 18th at 7:00 pm. Our guest speaker for this meeting will be Mike Jablinski from All Season Charters in Edmonds. We have scheduled to do a club fishing trip with them on January 16, 2016 when all the areas should be open for hatchery chinook. This is also our annual meeting of Elections to the Board. If you are interested in serving on the board, please plan to attend and let a board member know your desire to serve. We will also have an update on the happenings around the hatchery. Also, if you have an idea for a speaker for our General meetings, we would appreciate your input. We would like to invite people that you as a member would like to hear, but we need to know who that might be.

October General meeting canceled....Blackmouth shootout info

We are canceling the October 27, 2015 General Meeting once again because the speaker we intended to use is not able to attend. We will have Mike Jablinksi, All Season Charters speak at our November 18^th General Meeting. Current plan is to have Mike talk about blackmouth fishing in the Puget Sound off Edmonds as well as Captain another Blackmouth Shootout fishing trip we want to schedule for Saturday November 21^st or Sunday the 22^nd. Plans have not been finalized nor the costs but we will complete in the next week and let everyone know. The trip will be limited to the first 22 to sign up. This is earlier than the trip we did last year and area 9 should be open this time instead of just 10.

September General meeting canceled

The General Meeting scheduled for this evening (Sept. 23rd) has been canceled because the speaker we wanted to present is not able to be with us. We will have a general meeting on Wednesday October 28th.

Open House 2015

OPEN HOUSE AT WILLOW CREEK HATCHERY MAY 30 & 31 

The Edmonds Salmon Chapter Trout Unlimited will be celebrating their annual Open House at the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery in conjunction with the Edmonds Waterfront Festival as well as their 30^th Anniversary as a Hatchery. This will occur on Saturday May 30^th & Sunday May 31^st   2015 from 10am to 4pm. The hatchery is located at 95 Pine Street in Edmonds (NW corner of Pine Street and Hwy 104)

There will be shuttle busses from the Waterfront Festival that will drop off and pickup people at the entrance to the Festival from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.  Last bus from the Hatchery is at 4pm.

This annual open house is for the whole family. Free trout fishing for kids 12 and under. The Edmonds Salmon Chapter members will clean the fish. Free coffee, popcorn, juice, and cookies will be available. Tours of the fish hatchery will be available. A special attraction this year is an in-hatchery simulation of the salmon in a stream bed and how they interact with the flowing current.  Bring the family to the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery and see why the Edmonds Salmon Chapter has been awarded numerous Washington State Trout Unlimited Aquatic Education Awards.

The Willow Creek Hatchery was originally constructed in 1985 by a handful of dedicated fishermen who wanted to help with salmon enhancement in the north Puget Sound and to provide Aquatic Education to school children. In the 30 years since, over 10,000 students have learned about salmon and the importance of stream habitat from field trips to the hatchery.

GENERAL MEETING APRIL 22nd, 2015

Our presentation for the General meeting on April 22, 2015 will by Kip Killabrew. Kip has worked for 27 years with the Stillaguamish Tribe as their enhancement biologist overseeing the tribes’ conservation hatchery programs. He has previously worked with the WDFW, NOAA and the University of Washington. He is going to discuss the Past, Present and Future of the Stillaguamish River shed. He is a sought after expert on this area and his talks are always very entertaining and informative. We hope you will be able to attend this meeting at the Edmonds Senior Center on the Edmonds Waterfront at 7:00 PM

In addition to the presentation we will have some great raffle items and also discuss the upcoming Open House and Kid’s Fishing Pond at the Willow Creek Hatchery that occurs May 30 & 31, 2015.

The General Meeting scheduled for this Wednesday March 25th is being canceled. The next General meeting will be April 22nd at the Edmonds Senior Center.

Our next General Meeting will be March 25th at the Edmonds Senior Center @ 7:00 PM. Information about the speaker will be posted here in the next week and will also be included in our newsletter that will be published the middle of March.
We have our full compliment of coho in the Hatchery (80,000) as well as the 25,000 that are in the Imprint Pen located at the Edmonds'  Fishing Pier. We want to thank all those volunteers who showed up to assemble and launch the net pen and those that cleaned the fish pond prior to the arrival of the yearling fry we received. Your help is certainly appreciated.

November 19th General Meeting

Our next General Meeting will be Wednesday, November 19th at 7:00 pm at the Edmonds Senior Center south of the Edmonds Ferry Dock in Edmonds, WA.

Our speaker will be Mike Jablinski of All Season Charters who will captain the Annie A for our blackmouth fishing trip in December. (See more information below.) Mike will explain where we will be fishing, what type of gear you will need if you bring your own gear and general fishing tips for fishing blackmouth. Even if you are not going on the trip but plan on doing some fishing on your own this winter, you will find his talk informative.

In addition, this will serve as our annual meeting for election of board members. If you are interested in serving on the board, please contact Gary McConaghy at (206) 354-0877 to get your name on the ballot. The requirement is you must be a member for at least a year and willing to commit to monthly board meetings. We encourage you to step forward to serve on the board.

Blackmouth Fishing Trip

We have arranged for a full charter fishing trip on Sunday, December 14th at 6:30 am on the Annie A from All Season Charters in Edmonds. The charge for the day of fishing will be $50/member - this is a discounted fee thanks to an offset from the Board of Directors. This includes gear, if you need it, bait and coffee. We are limited to the first 23 that sign-up and pay their money at the General Meeting on November 19th at 7:00 pm. There will also be a $5 entry fee each for the two contests: First Fish and Biggest Fish. You are welcome to bring a lunch as well as beer or wine to enjoy on the water.

You will need a fishing license and we encourage you to pick one up ahead of time at either the All Season Charters’ office by Arnies restaurant or any other license retailer. We will meet at the charter office at 6:30 am. The boat will leave promptly at 7:00 am and return around noon.
